Beauty & The Beast

The night he came for me removed any roots I had planted to reality. It changed the very course of my life, implanting new steel roots to replace whatever was there before. It felt like the very breath in me was taken. His eyes glowing in the cover of darkness, stood six-foot five towering, and dwarfing me. He appeared suddenly on this path I had trodden on many a night. A moment earlier I had been strolling in awe of the moon as she watched over me in her fullness. She looked bigger this night. Bigger than I had ever seen her. She luminesced the forest with an air of dominance. Nothing else could take your eye then. Not with her seemingly closer to the earth than I had ever seen. She indicated an auspiciousness to this night, but I could have never sensed that I would be meeting a beast.

This beast of a man stood so tall and so broad, his chest puffed out and a slight bend in his knees. He looked ready. Like he could pounce on me or anything else in his path. His dark figure highlighted by the silvery glow from behind him. A deep growl emanated from somewhere in his chest. Those golden eyes pierced me and a shiver of terror and excitement slithered down my spine. With a quick deep breath, he let out an ear-piercing howl to the moon. I had never thought that I understood animals well enough to read them, let alone wild beasts. Two more quick successive howls and those eyes settled back on me. Molten gold lava that in turn spread a warmth throughout my body.

I willed my body to move. Where would I go? Run toward him? Turn away from him? There seemed to not be a sensible option. He stalked toward me in a slow deliberate manner. I got the sense that he was trying to appear human and probably moving slower than his preferred speed. It looked intentional and a little awkward. Like a giant trying not to draw attention. In a bid to keep distance, I walked backwards.
